Supporting the Mission of DMD

We hope that your experiences with Delta Mu Delta have expanded your knowledge and support network, leaving you with a wish to pass those positive experiences on to “those who follow you.”  Perhaps you remember those words from your pledge of membership.

And, you may have heard at the ceremony, “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

There are many ways to help: alumni participation at the chapter level; lending assistance to fellow members; and, donating to the Scholarship Fund. This page answers many questions you might have about your contribution and how the gift is used.

  • What about estate or corporate donations?

Here is our full donation policy as approved by the Society’s Board of Directors:

A gift or endowment is a voluntary donation from an individual(s) or private, non-governmental organization for which the donor receives no consideration or compensation other than a legitimate U.S. income tax deduction, and appropriate recognition of stewardship.

Delta Mu Delta, DMD, is defined as a not-for-profit corporation, incorporated in 1952 in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, USA, and is registered with our Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

DMD accepts monetary gifts on many levels and offers multiple methods of recognition of the donor(s).

Gifts of $25,000 or more may be placed into an individual endowment fund to support either a “sponsored by” or a named award (naming subject to Board review and approval) in perpetuity.

If a donor so chooses, gifts of $5,000 or more may be “banked” with DMD and accumulated toward establishing an endowment in the future.  Such amounts will be invested in specific instruments and earnings on the same will be credited toward the endowment until the level of $25,000 is reached.

In lieu of contributing to “Forever Dollars,” gifts of Up to $25,000 may be designated to sponsor a specific $1,000 scholarship for that same number of years, e.g., $5,000 may support a “sponsored by” scholarship for five years.

  • What will I receive for my donation?

First, an acknowledgment letter of thanks. It explains our 501(c)(3) IRS status and states that your donation may be deductible. It also reminds you to join our Facebook or LinkedIN community if you have not already done so. There will also be some additional information in the envelope as well as a small gift of appreciation with something to remind you of your membership in DMD.

  • How can I increase the power of my donation?

You can double – possibly triple – the value of your donation to DMD through the power of matching gifts – a method by which a company or private individual matches donations to charitable organizations. This is one of the smartest ways to enhance philanthropic giving.

Here is a step-by-step guide to maximizing your donation:

Step 1: Check with your company’s human resources or payroll department to see whether it offers a matching gift program.

Step 2: Ask for donation guidelines and find out whether different giving methods (e.g., credit card, check or money order) result in different matching levels.

Step 3: Decide how much you want to donate.

Step 4: Obtain a matching gift form from your human resources department and send the form along with your gift to Delta Mu Delta.

Step 5: Delta Mu Delta’s Central Office will then contact your company for the gift match.

  • How much of each dollar is spent on fund raising?

None! ALL administrative expenses are paid from the Society’s annual income – not from your contributions. Therefore, 100% of each dollar you donate goes directly into the Scholarship Fund principal.

Where else can you “invest” as little as $10 into a trust fund and know that it will be protected forever?

  • Why Should I Donate?

There are several reasons – some of which you may support, others you may reject. The first thought is  “It’s the right thing to do; help others!”

Do you remember your basic economics class when that old man/old lady talked about noblesse oblige – the responsibility of the more fortunate to assist the less fortunate?

Perhaps scholarships helped you through your college education. Do you want to help others in a similar manner? If supporting scholarships fits within your personal  and/or professional values, here is a great place to start.

  • What is the nature of the Scholarship Fund?

This is not your ordinary charitable donation! We do not spend the dollars you contribute to the Scholarship Fund – instead, we hold them “forever.” Hence, the name Forever Dollars Fund.

How can that work? The scholarships and recognitions awarded each year are funded from the annual earnings of the Scholarship Fund. The principle is not touched and we’ve never lost a dollar of it during our investings!

And, DMD is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and you may qualify to deduct your donation on your U.S. Income Tax filing.

To decide the awards and recognitions, a group of independent judges located across the country examine every scholarship application to determine the scholarships and the honorable mention awards. Those winners for the current and recent past years can be found here – Award Winners.
